{"id":464,"date":"2025-07-14T19:27:52","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T19:27:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thebasshog.com\/blog\/?p=464"},"modified":"2025-07-14T19:27:52","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T19:27:52","slug":"ott-defoe-takes-down-stage-6-at-potomac-river-for-fifth-bass-pro-tour-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thebasshog.com\/blog\/ott-defoe-takes-down-stage-6-at-potomac-river-for-fifth-bass-pro-tour-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Ott DeFoe takes down Stage 6 at Potomac River for fifth Bass Pro Tour win"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"info\"><\/div>\n<p>MARBURY, Md. \u2013<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>After a week that saw\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/anglers\/ott-defoe\/\">Ott DeFoe<\/a>\u00a0near the top of SCORETRACKER\u00ae every day he was on the water, the Tennessee pro finally shot to the top when it mattered most, taking down the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/events\/2025-06-26-stage-six-potomac-river\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zenni Stage 6 Presented by Athletic Brewing Company<\/a>\u00a0Championship Round for his fourth\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/circuits\/bass-pro-tour\/\">Bass Pro Tour<\/a>\u00a0regular-season win and fifth BPT win overall.<\/p>\n<p>With a dominant final-day performance, DeFoe stacked up 32 bass for 78 pounds, 11 ounces to beat his closest pursuer in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/anglers\/ron-nelson-162854\/\">Ron Nelson<\/a>\u00a0by nearly 27 pounds. Nelson finished as the runner-up, his best finish on the Bass Pro Tour since joining the ranks last season.<\/p>\n<p>DeFoe is one of the winningest anglers in Bass Pro Tour history, behind only\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/anglers\/jacob-wheeler\/\">Jacob Wheeler<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/anglers\/dustin-connell\/\">Dustin Connell<\/a>, but this marks his first individual win since Heavy Hitters in 2022. It\u2019s his fourth regular-season BPT win, the first since 2021 on Florida\u2019s Harris Chain of Lakes. He did it in typical DeFoe fashion, too, escaping the bulk of the 66-angler field and fishing far up a creek in the Potomac River backwaters.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how the Top 10 pros finished the Championship Round:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ott DeFoe \u2013 78 \u2013 11 (32)<\/li>\n<li>Ron Nelson \u2013 51 \u2013 13 (23)<\/li>\n<li>Bradley Roy \u2013 44 \u2013 11 (20)<\/li>\n<li>Cole Floyd \u2013 43 \u2013 11 (21)<\/li>\n<li>Zack Birge \u2013 41 \u2013 09 (20)<\/li>\n<li>Adrian Avena \u2013 40 \u2013 12 (20)<\/li>\n<li>James Elam \u2013 36 \u2013 07 (18)<\/li>\n<li>Keith Poche \u2013 35 \u2013 07 (15)<\/li>\n<li>Spencer Shuffield \u2013 31 \u2013 01 (15)<\/li>\n<li>Keith Carson \u2013 30 \u2013 01 (14)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/events\/2025-06-26-stage-six-potomac-river\/results\/\">Complete results<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DeFoe gets shallow and skinny for the win<\/h3>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FMajorLeagueFishing%2Fvideos%2F1257400925821774%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kicking off the event, DeFoe found himself in second place behind\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/anglers\/keith-poche\/\">Keith Poche<\/a>\u00a0after catching 70-2 during the first day of qualifying, most of it early in the day in what would end being his winning area, the extreme backwaters of Neabsco Creek.<\/p>\n<p>The second day, he didn\u2019t catch near as much after abandoning his creek when he saw other competitors heading there ahead of him, qualifying for the Knockout Round in 14th, where he again finished in second place behind Nelson with 54-3. On the final day, he was back in his element and caught them steadily, especially midday during high tide as he began to pull away from the field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe place where I caught them today was my first stop on the first day of the tournament,\u201d he said. \u201cI saw them everywhere in practice and knew it had great potential. I had some other places where I could get bites, but with an early boat number on the first day, I had to go and see if I could get there first because it\u2019s not a big area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fishing the same general area as fellow Championship Round qualifier\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/anglers\/keith-carson-183603\/\">Keith Carson<\/a>, both got off to fast starts the first day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Carson] was in there with me as well, fishing a little different section, but it was a blistering start on the first day for both of us,\u201d he said. \u201cI had 40 pounds by noon, but I had a later boat draw the second day, and I drove there and could see some other competitors idling back in there. I opted to turn around and leave and really struggled most of the day and barely made it to the Knockout Round.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeFoe couldn\u2019t make any other areas work but caught enough to advance. He was all-in on the area the final two days and took advantage of the tide schedule to get as far back as possible and reach bass in ultra-shallow water during the high tide, catching many of these fish he visually saw cruising due to the clear water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn practice, the best bite was mid-to-lower part of the outgoing tide when the water was really moving; kind of that mid-tide zone to the bottom end of the tide,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s when the bite made the most sense. We only got that the first day of the tournament, though. The high tide was the best for my deal because I could get so much further back. That was the most productive for me, especially today with how high the tide was during the final days of the tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Getting to ultra-shallow water was helped by the tide schedule, and DeFoe believes the recent excessive heat was also a benefit, pushing bass to the shelter in the cooler creeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of the major tributaries have a lot cooler water because it\u2019s flowing, and then you have big pad flats and cover going in for bass to relate to,\u201d he said. \u201cWith the extreme heat we had here, I believe it was a driving factor in why so many bass were up there. It also seemed like new fish were coming every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each day was slightly different in terms of DeFoe\u2019s lure choice, but a green pumpkin and orange compact 3\/8-ounce pitching jig and a wacky rig with a Sooner Run-colored\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.basspro.com\/p\/bass-pro-shops-wacky-stik-o-worm\">Bass Pro Shops Wacky Stik-O Worm<\/a>\u00a0were two staples.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe jig was a big player every day but the second day, and the wacky rig was the best for me today,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>DeFoe is excellent at fishing moving water and getting shallow in creeks and rivers everywhere he goes. He also has plenty of tidal river fishing experience over the years, both on the Potomac and other locations, but this was easily his best result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTidal water, in general, I\u2019ve cashed a lot of checks, but I don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve ever had a Top 10 on a tidal fishery,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve come to the Potomac quite a bit over the years, but this was by far my best finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As an angler who\u2019s frequently won events at all levels, DeFoe admits that his winning drought since 2022 has been on his mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/anglers\/andy-montgomery\/\">Andy Montgomery<\/a>\u00a0and I were able to get a win in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguefishing.com\/circuits\/team-series\/results\/?y=2024&amp;e=2188764&amp;r=0\">Team Series<\/a>\u00a0this last Fall, but it definitely has been weighing on me a little not winning one of these,\u201d he admitted. \u201cThis also was my first Top 10 of the year.
